Deadman's 5

The third race in this year's Outfield Sports Three-Counties Challenge was the Deadman's 5 in Carrick-on-Suir on Friday evening last. Conditions were very warm for the 101 runners who set out from Ormonde Castle to complete the loop through the Main Street and Sean Kelly Square before heading into the countryside to negotiate the Deadman's Boreen. From the outset it was clear that last year's winner of the race, Kevin Maunsell from Clonmel AC, was in no mood to relinquish the title. As the field made its way along Parkside to complete the first mile, Kevin had already established a very significant lead. At no point did the chasing pack look like eating into his advantage and Kevin came home a most convincing winner in 25:39. Carrick AC's Brian Murphy was a clear second in a time of 26:08 and Niall Sheil from St. Killians AC was third in 26:31. The ladies' race was also won by a Clonmel AC athlete with Claire Annan clocking a winning time of 30:25 . Waterford AC's Sylvia Malone took second place in 30:39 and third place was filled by Anne Marie Boland from Clonmel AC in 33:34. The Carrick AC ladies were led home by Mary Molloy who took the O/35 category prize with a time of 34:08.

Carrick AC  would like to thank all who helped to make this year's event such a success. In particular, the club is very grateful to Alan Treacy of Outfield Sports for the continued sponsorship of the race series. Thanks also to Barry Torpey and his team of stewards for ensuring the runners' safety on such a busy race route. The help of the local Garda Siochana and Carrick-on-Suir Red Cross was also greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank Carrick Swan GAA club for the use of their clubhouse as race headquarters. Finally, a big thank you to all who assisted with registration, timing, results and the post-race refreshments.

The fourth race in the series will be the Auto Power Rathgormack 5, celebrating its tenth anniversary in the beautiful Co. Waterford village on Friday 8th July with a 7:30 pm start.
