Carrick Road Runners Athletic Club was founded in 2006.
In May 2006 11 runners met in the Carraig Hotel to form the new look Carrick-on-Suir AC Road Runners. The club already had a very strong tradition at juvenile level so the formation of this new committee was a natural progression and its function was and is to focus on the senior side of the sport particularly on the road and cross-country scenes. From the outset the club was primarily made up of experienced athletes who came from other clubs as well as running enthusiasts who were new to the sport.
From small beginnings the club has grown to almost 100 members and is constantly expanding and evolving. We have not been short on ambition either and as well as members taking part in championship and open races the length and breath of the country we also organize numerous races and events on a year round basis including: The Outfield Sports 3 Counties Series (4 races), September 1 Mile Challenge Series (4 races), Super-Valu Winter League (14 races), The GOAL Mile every Christmas Day, Fit 4 Life (Tuesday evenings from February to May) and the summer meet & train sessions from the Sean Kelly Sports Centre. Away from the competitive side of the sport we also organise a number of coaching evenings, the annual flag day as well as prize-givings and social evenings.
One of the most interesting and heartening aspects of the clubs activities has been the fundraising efforts of our members who have collected money for some very worthy causes while competing in the sport they enjoy so much, including St. Bridget’s Hospital, South Tipp Hospice, the Irish Cancer Society, GOAL, Waterford Opthalmic Research Fund, the Bubblegum Club and Crumlin Children’s Hospital. Since May 2006 the club and its members have raised almost €50,000.00 for charity (February 2009) and you can be sure this figure will continue to grow.
We are still a very young club and we always looking for new comers to join our ranks. We cater for the experienced athlete as well as the casual fun runner and all in between.
