Carrick Road Runners Athletic Club Notes 21st July 2008

It was a night for records at the Morris Oil Piltown 10k which was held in ideal conditions on Friday night last as Race 3 in Carrick-on-Suir AC's 3 Counties series descended on the South Kilkenny village. Thanks to the hard work of Mark Connolly and his team 158 runners enjoyed what can only be described as a wonderful night's road running around Piltown, Kildalton and the surrounding areas. A lot of hard work was also put in by the club and committee members as well as their family and friends and our neighbouring club's. Once again without our sponsors this race or series would not be possible and the club is indebted to the generosity of local sponsors Morris Oil who helped make this the quality event it was. Our thanks also go to Outfield Sports and Asics who continue to support not only this series but also running in general in the area.

A lot of work on the ground was done by the local people of Piltown particularly in the areas of stewarding and post race refreshments and both aspects of the race were second to none. All at Carrick-on-Suir AC are grateful to Piltown GAA club for the use of its superb facilities as race hq and to its members for helping out on the night. Kildalton Agricultural College has been one of the clubs greatest supporters and Friday night was no different. Many of the runners commented on the course and its scenic location (if only they had time to enjoy it)! It is a credit to all involved and the club has been privileged to have the use of such a fine venue for both this race and for our Winter League. Piltown Gardai also did a fine job ensuring that all runners got around safely while the Carrick-on-Suir Irish Red Cross ambulance crew once again were on hand in case of any medical emergencies. Finally thanks to Keith and Shirley O'Shea on the timely production of race results.

How They Finished
At the business end of the race the inaugural Piltown 10k (the first of many I'm sure) was a memorable one. It was to be Clonliffe Harrier's Sergiu Turea who was to take up the running from the start and made his intentions clear that not only was he going for the win but also the special bonus prize for the 1st runner to break 31:00 and in doing so set the first course record for this new 10k course. He was to be successful on both counts and in some style too. A break away group of 5 lead from the gun and it was clear that the prizes would go the Turea, Shane Mullaney, Danny Smith, Tony Fogarty and Sean Foley but in which order was the question.

The latter 4 runners mentioned could only watch as Turea blasted his 31:00 minute target to complete this run in a time of 30:53 which is an average of 4:58 per mile. The Moldovian National has now also moved into the top spot in the overall series with Ravis Zakis just behind (Ravis missed this race due to his appearance at the National Track Championships the following). This means that the race for the overall title will go down to the wire at then Deadman's 5 in Carrick on 8th August.

In the case of the ladies Corinna Walsh was once again in top form and went on to make it 3 from 3 in Piltown and unlike Turea her lead cannot be beaten at the top of the ladies league table in this year's 3 counties series but can she make it 4 wins out of 4 appearances at the ‘Deadman's' in a couple of weeks. Only time will tell.
