Fitzgerald Fleming Long Faugheen 5k

The fourth annual Faugheen 5k saw a field of 130 runners line up in ideal running conditions on Friday evening last. This year's renewal was kindly sponsored by Fitzgerald Fleming Long Accountants, Carrick-on-Suir and once again formed the first leg of the OutfieldSports Three Counties Challenge. The series, which is now in its tenth year, takes in races over 5k to 10k in the neighbouring counties of Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny.

A group of six runners broke away from the field shortly after the race start and were tightly grouped as they passed through the village after 1.5km. Niall Sheil (St. Killians AC), runner-up in this race last year, and Kevin Moore (Dundrum AC) were still locked together after the completion of the Ballinurra loop but Niall proved the stronger over the last 200m into the village to take the victory by four seconds in 15:45. Close on their heels in third place was Damien Murphy (West Waterford AC). Carrick AC's first finisher was Derek Walsh who finished in sixth place with a time of 16:36.

The ladies' race was also closely contested with Sylvia Malone (Waterford AC) taking first place in a time of 18:13. Ana Leigh Hore from Kilmore AC was second in 18:42 with Suzanne Dullaghan (Waterford AC) third in 19:01. Carrick AC's first lady to finish was Mary Molloy in 20:39.

Carrick AC would like to thank all who helped to make this event such a success. We are particularly grateful to Fitzgerald Fleming Long for their generous race sponsorship and to Alan Treacy of Outfield Sports for once again sponsoring the overall series. Our friends in Carrick-on-Suir Red Cross were on hand to provide the essential medical and ambulance support and we are very grateful to Finola Walsh and her team for their assistance. A big thank you also to all of our race stewards who ensured the safety of all and to the Bartley family for providing parking facilities. Thanks also to the many volunteers and committee members who helped with parking, registration and race results. The post-race prize-giving and refreshments in Flemings Bar were greatly enjoyed by all and we thank Margaret Fleming for her hospitality.

The series will move to Co. Waterford for this year's second race, the very popular Tom Jordan Memorial Portlaw 5-miles on Friday, 6th May . The race will start at 7:30pm.
